This is very often the case with the amateur and means that he/she is not so restricted as regard the solders that can be used. They can use any grade of silver or soft solder and because of the lower silver content, are intrinsically less expensive. These alternative solders are easier to use in that they melt at lower temperatures. 456 contains 56% silver and melts at 625 - 650 deg C 2207 is a 4% silver tin alloy that melts at 205 deg C - easily reached with a soldering iron. The low temperature enables gems to be mounted without danger of tm cracking. Consisting of two white elements 2207 offers an excellent colour match. 842 paste is a 42% silver, cadmium bearing alloy that can be used to pre-place small quantities of solder. When using solder wires, hold them in a pin vice. It makes them more rigid, easier to hold and keeps the fingers out of the flame!
